Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Assin Central MP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central in the Central Region, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has described members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as people who are suffering from myopia and lacking foresight.
In his view, the NDC’s continuous criticism of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy being implemented by the Akufo-Addo led NPP administration is because “they are myopic thinkers and evil doers.”
Members of the opposition NDC and some think-tanks are blaming the government for rushing to implement the policy due to the accommodation challenges in the schools.
Government’s intention to introduce what it described as a “double track system” aimed at absorbing more students has also faced stiff opposition from some quarters.
Speaking on Oman FM’s National Agenda show on Wednesday monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong called the bluff of the critics of the policy.
He noted the challenges emanating from the implementation of the policy is inevitable since it is a new policy.
“There has not been any policy in the world that didn’t encounter challenges or mistakes,’’ he stated.
The Assin Central legislator argued that suggestions that the policy should have been deferred so that we concentrate on providing more infrastructure in our schools before rolling out is inappropriate.
He said there would still be problems even if we had built more schools before the implementation of the policy, saying, “it is better we implement it now and address the problems as we move along.”
“So if we don’t start today when should we start,” he quizzed.
“We have to start now and when the problems are coming you solve them one by one. Today the government has decided to build more classrooms. Government couldn’t have waited to build classroom before enrolling the students,” he said.
Touching on the double track system, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong rejected calls by IMANI and others who are asking the government to consult stakeholders on the policy.
He warned that the country would not develop if the government should consult stakeholders in everything.
“Ghana will not move forward if every day you will have to consult. People that have made themselves the best brain in this country I can tell you it is not only the classroom education but exposure is very important and you sit there and say we should consult,” he stated.
