A leading government official believes the shocking defeat of some key National Democratic Congress (NDC) personalities in Saturday's regional elections, is a clear indication of how easily the ruling party, the New Patriotic Party [NPP] will garner more seats in Parliament, which will also invariably translate into a landslide victory in 2020.
Deputy Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Patrick Yaw Boamah, opines if such political colossuses in the NDC have been shown the exit, it is obvious all is not well within the largest opposition party.
Five heavyweights of the NDC, were given the shocks of their lives when they were defeated in their quest to become regional chairmen of the party in their respective regions.
They are the former Transport Minister, Ms Aku Dzifa Ativor, who failed in her bid to lead the NDC in the Volta Region; the incumbent Eastern Regional Chairman, Mr Bismark Tawiah Boateng, who was also booted out as regional chairman; a former Central Regional Minister, Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, who was floored in the Central Regional polls and Mr Joseph Yammin, who was also defeated in the Ashanti Regional delegates elections.
In the Western Region, incumbent Michael Aidooo aka Big Aidoo was also lost his position chairman.
The Greater Accra Regional Chairman Mr Joseph Kobina Ade Coker, however, retained his position after a closely contested election.
Analyzing the results of the regional contest, Hon. Boamah, who was contributing to a panel discussion on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ said "with what we just witnessed over the weekend, the general elections will be cool chop for the NPP".
JDM NDC's Worst Performer As A Presidential Candidate
Hon Boamah, who is also the Member of Parliament [MP] for Okaikoi Central Constituency, dismissed reports citing the non-performance of some NDC executives in the run-up to the general polls as the bane of the then ruling party's huge electoral defeat in 2016, saying the NPP took that particular elections to heart, hence the rather strong and well-structured campaign to democratically oust the NDC from power.
Describing former President John Dramani Mahama as the NDC’s worst performer by a mile as a presidential candidate, the Deputy Minister pointed out that in every election, there will undoubtedly be winners and losers, therefore losing candidates should not be held entirely accountable when such electoral defeats occur.
“If so, then Former president John Dramani Mahama is also not qualified to contest the presidential seat because he is the worst performer amongst NDC presidential candidates,” he added.
