The National Youth Organizer hopeful for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Brogya Genfi has waded into the controversy surrounding the conversion of Unity and Katanga halls into unisex halls.
Management of the university which earlier this year announced its plans to do the unprecedented, assigned female students to the two hitherto male halls explaining that it was to make room for the increasing numbers of female students to be taken care of.
The current and past students of the two traditional halls have embarked on a series of demonstrations against the decision by the university authorities to convert their all-male halls into a unisex hall.
Several persons in the current government including Sammi Awuku, Henry Nana Boakye and Mr Justin Koduah Frimpong have all kicked against the decision by authorities of the university in one way or the other.
Mr Yaw Brogya Genfi in a statement is urging the authorities of KNUST to engage more with the students in order to bridge the seeming gap and let the young students come to appreciate key decisions such as this as critical stakeholders in the University Community.
“It important for me to join Ghanaians in condemning the avoidable brutalities meted out to the young intellectuals whose only crime is to exercise their right of opinion. Much as the students may have genuine cause to protest against this action of the University, the fact that authorities of the school have also steadfastly stood their ground in the face of open public protestations and even legal suits, calls for a roundtable discussion geared towards a win-win situation. It is my contention that there was a gap in building consensus between authorities and students of the two halls which has led us to where we are today. It is in the light of this that I urge the authorities of KNUST to engage more with the students in order to bridge the seeming gap and let our young students come to appreciate key decisions such as this as critical stakeholders in the University Community” he said in the statement copied to MyNewsGh.com
