Teachers in the Garu and Tempane districts of the Upper East Region have appealed to the government, parliamentarians and local government authorities in the area to institute district level award scheme for hardworking and dedicated teachers.
Such a scheme, the teachers say will urge the teachers in the districts to put in their best despite the challenges that they face.
District Chairman of the GNAT in the Garu and Tempane districts secretariat Mr Bansi Illiasu Fuseini, made the appeal last Friday at an event to mark this year’s World Teachers’ Day on at Garu District.
It was organized by the district Secretariat of GNAT on the theme “The Right to Education Means the Right to Qualified Teacher”.
Mr Fuseini paid a glowing tribute to all teachers particularly those in the Garu and Tempane districts for their hard work.
The guest speaker for the event, Mr Patrick Azumah Azanya, because pupils and students have high confidence in teachers, their lifestyle, either good or bad, could easily have consequential effect on the development them.
He thus asked them to lead a life worthy of emulation as well as ensure that their pupils and students are disciplined and live harmoniously with their peers.
Mr Azanya said indiscipline behaviour exhibited by some teachers lately are threats to the educational system.
He thus urged teachers to live decent and morally upright lives to influence children and facilitate their proper upbringing and development.
District chief executive, Paul Azumah Abugri in a speech read on his behalf, noted that the role of teachers in molding useful and purposeful youth is very significant and could not be overemphasized.
He again said the assemblies will continue to partner with key stakeholders in education to instill high sense of morality, integrity and discipline not only among teachers but also pupils and students.
The DCE stressed that a valuable society and sustainable development could be attained if children were taught and instilled with the rudiments of uprightness and integrity which they could learn from teachers.
On his, the Director of Education, said teaching is a profession which required self-denial, patient and sobriety.
He said numerous responsibilities were placed on teachers in ensuring that the nation met its required human resource base needed for development.
He assured that the District Assembly would continue to assist teachers at all times to help raise the educational standards in the area.
He expressed the hope that all teachers, especially those serving in deprived communities would be well motivated.
Meanwhile the national president of GNAT has called on government to fast track payment of teachers arrears before the end of the year to enable celebrate the Christmas with joy with their families.
