This week's edition of Newsfile promises to be an engaging one as Host Samson Lardy Anyenini and his guests dissect pressing issues that made headlines.
The issue of riots at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will be highlighted, with focus on all the sides of the subject.
A supposed peaceful demonstration turned violent, culminating in the closure of the school and dissolution of the Governing Council. The students vandalized some school properties in a demonstration against authorities of the school following the arrest of 10 students.
The students, numbering over hundred were clad in red and mounted barricades on some roads on the campus. The executive council of the SRC said the demonstration was necessary to end the management’s neglect of students.
However, things got out of hands on Monday during the protest as various properties were destroyed. Management of the University subsequently closed down the school temporarily due to the extent of damage and insecurity on campus, leading to a 12-hour curfew on the campus from 6:00pm to 6:00am.
To remedy the situation on the ground news broke that the Governing Council of KNUST had been dissolved and an interim one created, a decision which didn’t go down well with members of KNUST-UTAG. An indefinite strike over the dissolution was shortly declared.
On another front, Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Mr. Kwame Owusu allegedly had squandered an amount of GHC135,125 (the old Ghana cedis equivalent of GHC1,351,250,000) one night on food and GHC10,652 on another occasion on food for just eight people.
The hotel where the expenses were incurred and paid for with the approval of the Director-General, the Luxe Suites Hotel is owned by Mr Kwame Owusu who was appointed by President Akufo-Addo to head the Ghana Maritime Authority.
However, the Ghana Maritime Authority issued a statement refuting claims of spending over GHC135,000 on food for eight people in a single meeting in a hotel owned by the Director-General of Ghana Maritime Authority, Mr Kwame Owusu.
