The Chief Executive of Uni-Jay Limited and founder of Amaleboba Foundation, in Kumasi, Mrs. Janet Abobigu, has been adjudged the Chamber Business Woman of the Year, 2017, by the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
At the Chamber Business Awards 2017 ceremony, held in Accra, the enterprising industrialist was recognized for her entrepreneurial ingenuity and exceptional leadership that has driven her start-up business from a veranda to business that employs over 200 staff.
In a citation accompanying the award, the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry lauded her philanthropic enterprise that seeks to bring relief to many, particularly school children across the country, and her sedulous pursuit to empower young women.
Part of the citation read: “In a bid to keep your staff responsive and relevant in the era of dynamic customer habits, you instituted training programmes that are competency compliant, thus ensuring the best result are chalked.
Your able leadership has also seen some dynamic environmental management initiatives in the areas of e-waste management, energy, and water efficiency etc.
These qualities set you miles apart from your peers in the Chamber’s search for Business Woman. Your CSR initiatives remain unmatched as your outfit continues to contribute its widow’s mite to the community. Your continuous passions at ensuring women empowerment so as to contribute to national development have had resounding results, for which you are ranked highly.
Our team of assessors were also touched by your exploits that is geared towards bringing relief to many and appropriately confer o you, Mrs. Janet Abobigu, Founder of Uni-Jay Company Limited, the Chamber Business Women of the Year 2017.”
The 54-year old mother, who is married to Mr. Thomas Kwame Abobigu, an accountant by profession, speaking at the sidelines of the award ceremony dedicated her achievement to her employees and business associates who she said have made it possible for her work to be recognized, both home and abroad.
She specifically also dedicated her award to head-potters, across the country, whom she said should persevere no matter the obstacles to realise their dreams.
Mrs. Abobigu expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, CHASS, Newmont Ghana Limited, Chirano Gold Mine Limited, and several businesses and individuals for their support.
In addition to her recognition, her company, Uni-Jay Company Limited, was also given “The Chamber Regional Award – Ashanti Region for the Year 2017,” as well as being crowned the “Fashion Company for the Year 2017.”
These awards, swept on the night of the ‘Chamber Business Awards,’ adds up to numerous local and international acknowledgment of the industriousness of Mrs. Abobigu, who is a large-scale manufacturer in the garment industry.
She was recently also named the “Women Empowerment Icon of Africa” during the 5th Annual Global Official Dignity Award, at the United Nations, in New York.
Other prestigious awards that she has won recently include the ‘Asantehene Special Award,’ given by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation, for her enormous contribution towards teaching and learning in Ghana, and the ‘Gold Award,’ at the Ashanti Business Excellence.
