Many teenagers in Wa who are expected to be in school during contact hours are leaving classrooms to drive tricycles popularly known as ‘Mahama Camboo’ for a living, Sumbu Tricycle Union Chairman, has said.

Mr Salifu Saboggu, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency in Wa, described the situation as a serious one because several children in the Municipality were dropping out of school to pursue the transport business.

He said the emerging trend was responsible for lot of school dropouts in the locality where children as low as 12 years follow their colleagues or senior ones to learn the driving business.

Mr Saboggu said many teenagers complained after the Union officials confronted them that they are bread winners in their families and that quitting the driving business would further impoverish them and their dependents.

He expressed worry that the children who are the future leaders of the country are engaging in commercial activities at the time they were supposed to be in school learning.

Mr Saboggu appealed to the municipal authorities and stakeholders to join forces to address the problem and get the children back to school.

“I am appealing to the general public, opinion leaders and the government to help in getting these children back to the classroom for a better tomorrow,” he said.
