Some staff of KIA demands items from travelers when they refuse to give them money
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has served notice it is investigating claims workers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) were harassing and extorting funds and items from travellers using their facility.
To that effect, a task force has been assembled to identify uniformed personnel working at the Kotoka International Airport engaged in the practices which it described as highly unprofessional, unethical and unacceptable.
A statement signed by the Director General of the GCAA; Simon Allotey also asked the Ghana Airports Company (GACL) Ltd to put measures in place to curb such practices.
The GCAA further urged the public not to give in to pleas, coercion or extortion of money by any personnel operating at the Kotoka International Airport and should report such conduct to the Consumer complaints unit within the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.
The KIA staff take are accused by some travelers of demanding perfumes, headset, ear pods, confectioneries when a traveller says he or she has no cash to give. Others say their luggages are also opened and items pilfered. Even when present, the officials they claim pick valuables of their choice declaring it as gifts.
The members of staff of GACL, Immigration and Customs although are on monthly salary, can behave as beggars other travellers submitted.
