Asamoah owes Ghanaians no apology — Samuel Osei Kuffuor defends Gyan

At a time most Ghanaians are patiently waiting for under fire Black Stars Skipper, Asamoah to openly apologise to them for his numerous on-pitch and off-pitch sins and heartbreaks in the wake of the DNA results confirming he is the father of all three children he has with Gifty Gyan, Former Ghana defender Samuel Osei Kuffour disagrees.

He insists that Asamoah Gyan does not owe Ghanaians any apology particularly in relation to the missed spot kick against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals which was meant to push Ghana into the semifinals.

The player left many Ghanaians heartbroken after the incident which led to a resolution on the advice of his late mother never to take penalty kicks for the country following a barrage of verbal attacks he was subjected to by football lovers.

Samuel Osei Kuffour who himself has faced similar situations thinks Asamoah Gyan must not apologise because it is part of the game of football and it is bound to happen in the career of any player describing him as the top scorer in the country.

“I will tell him should not say sorry to anybody. In that 2010 tournament how many penalties did he not score for Ghana? How many goals did he not score for Ghana in that same tournament? Asamoah Gyan is the leading scorer for Ghana as far as Black stars is concerned. For just one mistake he should come and apologise….I don’t think so”, he revealed.

The former Black Stars Defender wondered how they want such an apology to be given. “Do they want him to go from one house to the other apologizing to Ghanaians for the missed penalty? I don’t think he should”

Asamoah Gyan himself has admitted that he still has regrets over the penalty miss against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Luis Suarez’s prevented Dominic Adiyiah’s header from entering with his hand and the controversial Uruguay striker was sent off and a penalty was awarded to Ghana.



However, Asamoah Gyan missed from the spot kick in what became the last kick of the game.

“If there is anything I would love to change in my career, it would be my penalty miss against Uruguay. I wish that day could come again for me to retake the penalty differently. I am still haunted by that penalty miss but I have to move on,” Gyan said on Adom TV monitored by MyNewsGh.com
