The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Thursday said it is shocked over the sudden passing of Edward Ameyibor, a veteran journalist and former president of the GJA.
His family said he died at 76 years, on Monday, May 13, 2019 after a short illness.
In recognition of his untiring services to the inky fraternity, the GJA, in a statement signed by its President, Mr Affail Monney, said it would open a Book of Condolence in his memory at the Ghana International Press Centre at 0800 hours on Monday, May 20, 2019.
It, therefore, urged all present and past national executives of the professional association, members of the inky fraternity, heads of media institutions, media partners and friends of the media to endeavour to sign the Book of Condolence.
Mr Ameyibor, the GJA said, dedicated his professional career to the cause of the GJA, in particular, and the Ghanaian media in general.
“He contributed significantly to the growth and development of the GJA. He also groomed and mentored a large number of journalists in his professional career, cutting a father figure for many a young journalist over the past three decades,” it said.
“He was very respectful, friendly, jovial and affable, characteristics that endeared him to all manner of people regardless of their backgrounds.
“Indeed, Oga was a colossus in the media and there are not enough words to chronicle his good deeds to journalism and mankind. There is no doubt that the death of Oga is a big loss not only to the GJA, but Ghana as a whole”.
Edward Ameyibor, popularly known as ‘Oga’, worked with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) for almost four decades - from October 1, 1963 to August 31, 2002- rising to the high office of Supervising Chief Editor until his retirement.
After leaving the GNA, he worked with Diamond FM, a private radio station in Tamale, for many years as General Manager. He also served in various capacities, including the Vice Chairman of HelpAge Ghana and the General Secretary of SSNIT National Pensioners Association.
The GJA expressed its condolence to the bereaved family and loved ones ‘for such a big loss’.
“In times like this, the eyes may not cease with tears and the heart may not let go grief. But we pray that the good Lord will be their ever-sure comforter”.
