Kumasi, Feb 7, GNA-Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, acting Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, has called for closer collaboration between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to facilitate rapid socio-economic development.
Mr Jumah made the call when he met with members of the Development Planning Committee, assembly members and other technical staff of AMA, who were on a day's working visit to the KMA on Monday.
The visit was to enable the two assemblies to share ideas about their common problems and how to overcome them.
He disclosed that although the KMA collected seven billion cedis revenue last year, efforts were being made to improve on the figure this year.
Mr Jumah announced that the KMA has embarked on a medium, short and long term plan to ensure the rapid development of the metropolis. Mr Stephen Nkansah Buabeng, Chairman of the Development Planning Committee of the KMA, said the committee's duty was to implement the policies of the assembly.
He expressed the hope that the interaction between the two assemblies would greatly enhance the performance of the two metropolitan assemblies especially in terms of development.
Mr Anthony Mensah, Director of the Waste Management Department of the KMA, said measures had been put in place to privatise the collection of waste, which has been a problem to the Assembly.
He said a Memoranda of Understanding had been signed between the KMA and some investors in Canada to start a project very soon to turn the garbage into electricity.
Mrs Freda Prempeh, Chairperson of the AMA Development Planning Committee, said the two assemblies have similar problems such as poor sanitation, construction and location of unauthorised structures and management of street hawkers.
