The Head of Mycotoxin and Histamine Laboratory at the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) Derry Dontoh together with Aldo Rosales, a supervisor and coordinator at the Maize Laboratory in the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 led discussions on how to combat aflatoxin problems.

GSA in its bid to fight aflatoxins embarked on the sensitization campaign in Navrongo to disseminate information on the poisonous carcinogens and provide solutions.

According to organisers, the event sought to “catalyse and sustain an inclusive agricultural transformation by improving food safety and security through increased knowledge about aflatoxins, its impacts and management.”

While Mr. Dontoh led a discussion on Aflatoxins standard and management, Mr. Rosale introduced a process that has been proven to reduce the aflatoxin content in white maize known as Nixtamalization.

Prof. Francis Amagloh of the University for Development Studies on the other hand, spoke on complementary feeding as a way of reducing human exposure to aflatoxins.

The program dubbed National Aflatoxin Sensitisation and Management Project is supported by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and her partners namely the Embassy of Mexico in Ghana, University of Development Studies, IITA, MOFA, FDA, Farm Radio International, Nestle and the the National Steering Committee on Aflatoxin Control.
