A Deputy Commissioner at the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Dr Bossman Asare has the competence to handle the task entrusted to him by the state, and should, therefore, be left alone to work, a former Ashanti Regional Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Agyenim Boateng, has said.

According to him, former President John Mahama’s recent attacks on Dr Asare are misplaced.

Mr Mahama recently said the posturing of the former University of Ghana political science lecturer and the Chair of the Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa cast doubts on the credibility and neutrality of the election management body vis-à-vis the upcoming 2020 elections.

He told Accra-based Citi FM in a recent interview that: “Her [Jean Mensa’s] deputy is even worse; his utterances are not acceptable, Bossman Asare, I think. We have our doubts that they can be neutral. We are prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.”

“They need to prove us wrong. We have our doubts that they can be neutral and fair… The current posture and the way they are conducting things make us doubt that they will be neutral and fair in 2020.”

But speaking on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra100.5FM hosted by Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Thursday, 30 May 2019, Mr Agyenim Boateng said the comments by the former president “are unfounded and baseless.”

“The track records of the Chair of the Commission and her deputy, who Mr Mahama is talking about, are there for us all to see. These are personalities who carried themselves well in what they were doing before their appointment and since they assumed office at the Commission, they have been doing well.

“The records are there for everybody to see. The NDC has gained notoriety for spreading falsehood and propaganda about the Commission and that is worrying, they should stop.”
