The Auditor-General (A-G), Mr. Daniel Domelevo has appealed to African countries to urgently and continuously share information and ideas on strategies to combat corruption and stop “looters of our resources and treasuries.”
Mr. Domelevo was speaking at the 1st African Anti-Corruption Forum in Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt on Wednesday 12th June 2019.
He spoke on the topic “Ghana’s Efforts in Implementing Continental and International Commitments on Anti-Corruption”
Among others, the A-G urged the countries to urgently create truly independent Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) and resource them.
SAIs, he said, understand illicit financial flows, transfer pricing, etc, therefore empowering SAIs will “save our respective countries’ fortunes.”
The A-G also advised State actors to meet regularly to brainstorm on new ways of combating corruption.
These meetings, he noted, will offer all stakeholders the opportunity to adopt new techniques and re-strategize to fight corruption-related activities.
He emphasized the need to continuously educate citizens on the evils corruption unleashes on the economy including insecurity and exhorted the media and Civil Society Organisations to join the fight against corruption.
Mr. Domelevo assured the continent that the Ghana Audit Service is ready and willing to engage local and international institutions to forge a united front to fight and minimize corruption in any form and make it less attractive for potential perpetrators.
In a philosophical tone, he concluded, “It is dangerous fighting corruption but it is even more dangerous not fighting it”.
