Residents of Nkawkaw have expressed their desire to kick out their MP in a recent research conducted to assess the performance of legislators across all 275 constituencies in the country.

The research conducted by the University of Ghana’s Political Science department reveals how nearly 50% of Members of Parliament may lose their seats due to, among others, their unpopularity in their various constituencies.

The research, which was purposed to find out the performance of MPs in their various constituencies aside their duties in parliament, noted that only 95 of the 275 MPs stand the chance of retaining their seats.

According to the report, a staggering 73 percent of constituents in Nkawkaw for instance are disgruntled with their sitting MP and Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour.

The residents, according to the report, cite the Minister’s inability to honour a number of promises made in the build up to the 2016 general elections.

ABC News Ghana cited a copy of the research report which confirms that only 25 percent of the respondents were willing to give the honorable member the nod to contest the seat in 2020.

Similar ratings were given to other legislators in the UG survey with the researchers concluding that a number of these MPs, majority of whom appear to be with the governing NPP, may lose their seats if the trend continues.

The report also showed that NPP MPs have not been involved in disseminating information about government’s flagship programmes specifically ‘One District One Factory’ and ‘One Village One Dam’ to their constituents.

The research titled “Assessment of 275 Members of Parliament – Perspectives from the Constituencies” was carried out in all 275 constituencies in the country with a total of 27,500 respondents, 100 from each constituency.

The report has received different reactions from the Ghanaian public including the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Mike Ocquaye.
