Staff of the Ashanti regional branch of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) are have declared a sit-down strike against the management of the state-owned transport company.

The angry Staff of the organization are protesting poor management of the company’s vehicles among other human resource challenges.

According to them, majority of the vehicles in the region have broken down and no effort is being made to fix them for the effective operation of the company.

The sit-down strike by the Staff has left several passengers stranded at the lorry terminal particularly passengers travelling to the Northern Ghana, Sunyani and other parts of Central Ghana.

One of the senior staff, Kwame Asumadu told Journalists in Kumasi on Wednesday they plan to escalate their protest to Accra if the CEO of the company does not resolve their concerns as soon as possible.

“What annoys us the most is the lack of common respect for us the staff of the Metro Mass Transit workers. The young man they brought here to manage the company talks to us anyhow as if we are his children,” Asumadu said.

“The company is seriously collapsing under this administration, they talk more and do less. Come to our station and you will realise that at least about 200 vehicles are not in operation, that’s why any time you come here you see people stranded.

“Currently majority of the vehicles you see here are private own cars, the government cars are not working. If they provoke us we will reveal all the corrupt practices in the system,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah is set to meet the angry Staff of the state-owned transport organization to calm them down.
