The President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Affail Monney has decried the politicisation of issues in the country including the recurrent attacks on journalists.

The GJA president says except the air that Ghanaians breathe, every issue that comes up in the country is examined under political lenses.

Speaking at the 2nd public lecture of GJA's 70th Anniversary, he said the tendency to engage in discussions on political lines transcends into almost all issues including discussions on attacks on journalists.

"We live in a country where almost every issue is refracted with partisan lenses, except maybe the air we breathe,” he said.

According to him, discussions in the country have been reduced to politics with everything being made about the two major parties political parties in the country.

“Everything is NPP or NDC, to the extent that the attacks against journalists are subject to partisan gymnastics.”

Also speaking at the lecture was the Chairman of the National Media Commission, Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, who said the limits of journalism is one that does not need to be determined by the police or military.

According to him, anything as such contravenes the 1992 constitution which gives journalists in the right to practice without fear or intimidation.

He added that the current status of journalism in the country makes it right to say it is under attack, saying it will be wrong to say journalism in the country is under siege.

The GJA founded on August 15, 1949 is 70 years this year. As part of events to commemorate the anniversary the association has organised two public lectures with the second one held on Thursday, October 03, 2019.

The 70th Anniversary celebration is themed: Democracy, freedom and independence of the media in Ghana: 70 years of GJA’s contribution.
