Two entrepreneurs from Germany have been awarded dual citizenship by the Republic of Ghana, GhanaWeb can report.
Michaela Tomfeah and Julia Tomfeah according to a tweet by Ghana’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Gina Blay, become the first Germans to receive Ghana’s dual citizenship which was awarded to them by Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
Michaela and Julia Tomfeah will now be recognised as citizens of Ghana and enjoy the same rights, privileges and responsibilities any other Ghanaian enjoys.
The laws of Ghana permits a person who wants to be a citizen of Ghana to apply to the Minister for the Interior and get approval by the President of Ghana. Such a person becomes a citizen after the certificate of naturalization has been issued and oath of allegiance sworn to.
Section 13 of the Citizenship Act, 2000 (Act 591) states, “The Minister may with the approval of the President grant a certificate of naturalisation to a person of age and capacity who satisfies the Minister that he is qualified under section 14 of this Act for naturalisation.”
It further states in clause (2) “A person to whom a certificate of naturalisation is granted under subsection (1) shall take the oath of allegiance and become a citizen by naturalisation from the date on which the oath of allegiance is taken.”
