The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), reacting to the pending tension between them and Nigerian traders, say they are only responding to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s call for Ghanaians to be citizens and not spectators.
The comment of GUTA follows a scuffle between some Ghanaians and Nigerian traders in the early hours of Monday at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
The fight, according to witnesses and some petty traders, ensued as a result of Ghanaian traders asking Nigerian businessmen to lock up their shops.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show, the Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) of GUTA, Joseph Osei Agyemang explained their constant action is to get the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) laws to be enforced.
“The GIPC law of Ghana frowns on foreigners in the retail market but we don’t see that law being enforced. We want to be citizens and not spectators as the President charged us to be that is why we have decided to safeguard our jobs,” he said.
To Mr Agyemang, GUTA is only seeking for the right thing to be done with regards to the influx of foreigners in the Ghanaian retail markets.
Commenting on the aftermath of Monday’s clash, the PRO explained calm had been restored to the area following the immediate and commendable response of the Ghana Police Service.
