Public Service Workers Union reject salary structure

Wed, 4 Aug 1999 Source: Joy FM

The Accra Branch of Public Service Workers Union (PSWU), has rejected the Universal Salary Structure, calling it "a sham that has not addressed the inadequacies in the salary regime".

The group said the old way of negotiating on the strength of "Collective Bargaining Agreements" should be reintroduced in the public sector to address the frustrations workers face.

Mr. Joseph Auch, Chairman of the branch, said the much-tooted slogan of "equal pay for equal work," associated with the salary document "is a deceit. It rather demeans the worker due to the many anti-welfare clauses. He said "if the Price Waterhouse report is allowed to rule, the labor movement, which has been the only protector of the worker, would wither way giving way to" a situation we can never fathom".

He predicted a "long, uncompromising labor uprising in the country if the government does not turn way from its anti-worker policies aimed at pleasing the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Mr. Auch, who was in the company of Mr. Nat Okine, vice Chairman and Mr. Benjamin Sam second trustee, warned, " we shall strike if we are not heard. At least to save the lives of workers and the stability of our society."
