Energy minister, Professor Mike Ocquaye says construction works on the West African Gas Pipeline project will start this week. Presidential Kufuor will cut the sod to start work on Thursday. The $ 500 million project will transport gas from Nigeria to Ghana, Benin and Togo.
Speaking at the opening of the 15th Congress of the Union of Producers, Transporters and Distributors of Electric Power in Africa, Professor Ocquaye says Ghana stands to benefit immensely once the project becomes operational.
"For Ghana in particular, when the West Africa gas pipeline project delivers natural gas, we shall have more cost effective fuel for power generation, support our manufacturing and industrial sectors," he says. He says the project will make Ghana more competitive in the sub regional and world market. "This will be the bench mark for allied developments in our part of the world," he says.
