Registration of freshmen at the University of Ghana, Legon, took off under tight Police security. About 200 Policemen under the command of officers from the Legon Police Station have been deployed to assist the local campus security to ensure the smooth running of the exercise.

As at 1000 hours this morning, hundreds of freshmen have queued at the respective halls for registration to pay their fees in full. Meanwhile, 15 freshmen have paid 50 per cent as initial deposit under the new flexibility terms of settlement with the remaining amount to be paid in three equal installments over a six months period.

Mr. Robert Acquah, Chief Audit Assistant of the University, said flexible terms of settlement has being laid out. He said the terms would be as follows - November 30 this year, January 31 and March 31, next year. He, however, said that the other terms would be made available sometime next year.

Mr. Nii Narku Dowuona, President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), said that the SRC is pleased with the turnout of the freshmen and the smoothness of the registration. He, however, stressed that the continuing students will only pay what they paid last year "which is about 50 per cent of the new fees." Mr. Dowuona noted that the SRC is not in favor of the flexibility terms of settlement scheme, adding that the government's three billion bursary "is ridiculous".
