Winning the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is non-negotiable and must happen at all cost, popular radio presenter Countryman Songo has tasked new Black Stars coach, CK Akonnor.
Ghana has been on the elusive search for a fifth AFCON trophy since winning the fourth nearly four decades ago in Libya.
The country headed into the 2019 AFCON with hopes of ending the drought but it ‘ended in tears’ with a round 16 exit, the worst in the last decade.
The Black Stars’ poor performance at the AFCON cost coach Kwesi Appiah his job as he was axed in a technical team dissolution exercise undertaken by the FA leadership.
Almost a month after relieving Kwesi Appiah of his duties, the FA today announced a new technical team for the Black Stars with CK Akunnor as its head.
Akunnor will be assisted by former Kotoko coach David Duncan and a host of other technical members who will be playing various roles.
Speaking to ghanaweb.com Songo revealed his expectations of Akunnor which is to win the AFCON and create a strong team that will reclaim Ghana’s fast diminishing pride as Africa football’s royalty.
Songo urged Akunnor to eschew favoritism in his selections and instil discipline in the Black Stars players.
“He has to stay on track and win because if he goes off-track we will fire him. The Black Stars is a big job and we are not joking there. When you are coaching the Black Stars, you don’t have to joke because the tax payers money we spend a lot there. We have not been able to win the AFCON for years and Ghanaians want to see that trophy so if you are the Black Stars coach, it’s all about business.
“We want you to take the Black Stars to the next level. We don’t want players coming in and out not based on merit. The coach must be professional enough to understand that this time around we are not joking at all. We want our Black Stars to win. That’s the target we’ve set out there and we want to break that jinx about the AFCON
