FLASHBACK: I am ready for national team job - CK Akunnor

As the old adage goes, ‘when the time is right, everything will fall in place.’

This is just the best way to describe Charles Kwablan Akunnor’s rise to become the new coach of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars.

Even before CK Akunnor was appointed the head coach of Asante Kotoko, the former Black Stars captain had dreams of becoming the next coach of the Senior National team.

In 2018 when Akunnor was the coach of Obuasi Ashantigold, the gaffer told Ghanaweb.com about his intentions and ambitions of becoming the head coach of the Black Stars.

At that time, it seemed impossible because he had not achieved much. However, the former Wolfsburg player was patient and worked his way up.

Akunnor led Ashantigold to the summit of the 2018/19 Ghana Premier League table. However, the Anas Number 12 expose on Ghana football truncated the league and Akunnor moved on to Kotoko.

At Kotoko, the former Black Stars captain qualified the Porcupines to the CAF Champions League after winning the Normalization Committee’s Tier 1 Cup.

He led the club to a remarkable feat at the CAF Confederation Cup where they were unbeaten at home and exited in the Money Zone before being sacked by the club.

Five months after, CK earned an appointment to become the assistant coach of the Black Stars at the request of Kwasi Appiah and now he is the head coach of the team.

Dreams definitely do come through.

Ashanti Gold head coach C.K Akunnor, believes the time will come when he will be in a prime position to become Black Stars head coach.

The former Black Stars captain has spent time interning with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic FC in addition to his stints with the likes of Dreams FC, Hearts of Oak and Sekondi XI Wise.

He confessed to not being in a rush to take up the position but believes that when the opportunity presents itself he will be ready.

“When it is my turn to lead Ghana no one can stop it. If I have to coach the U-17 and U-20 to get there it is all in the hands of God. Human beings will try to put you down and try to retard your progress but once God says it is your time nothing will stop.”

“I am only believing in God and not humans. People talk but I am not flattered by what they say, I respond positively, so I am not flattered at all,” he said in an exclusive interview on Ghanaweb's Sports Check show.

For now, he remains focused on trying to reclaim the Ghana Premier League title which they won in 2015 from Aduana Stars.
