Kumasi, Aug 31, GNA--The Nigerian High Commission is to introduce and issue consular identity cards to all Nigerians resident in Ghana to help minimise some of the problems encountered by them, Mr Mohammed Mua'zu, acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, has said.

He explained that the identity card is expected to help its holder to keep his passport safely at home and be an authority for his legal status so that the immigration and police authorities would know that the holder is in touch with the commission.

Mr Mua'zu was addressing members of the Nigerian Youth Association at its inauguration in Kumasi on Monday. Mr Mua'zu said through the commission's efforts, Nigerians in detention have been released while the mission continues to liaise with relevant Ghanaian authorities to ensure that all Nigerians resident in Ghana live in peace.

The High Commissioner assured them that the commission would continue to render not only consular assistance but also assist those who wish to do genuine business. He urged them to be law-abiding, honest and transparent in all their activities assuring them that the commission would give them all the necessary encouragement to sustain the association.

Mr Joseph Obi, president of the association, said members are very conscious of the statutory immigration laws of Ghana and are mindful of its implementation.

He said the association would continue to promote peace and love between Ghana and Nigeria and called on the media and security personnel to feel free to call on the secretariat to verify any information on its activities.

Mr Gani Lawal, patron of All Nigerian communities in Kumasi, called on the executives to mount programmes to educate members on their rights and responsibilities saying that they should help improve areas where they live.

He advised them to admit new members from other Nigerian groups in the region so that they also benefit from programmes and activities of the association. Other members of the executive are Mr Obioran Nwojiofor, vice-president, Mr Uche Obiokor, general secretary, Mr Chukwuma Okonkor, financial secretary, Mr Charles Nzeoke, treasurer and Mr Chuks Ogoke, public relations officer.
