The Dean of Students Affairs of the University of Ghana, Prof. Godfred Bopkin is urging management of the University to work on reaching an agreement with telecommunication companies in the country to help in the rolling out of the e-learning programme.

Currently, the University has reached an agreement with Vodafone Ghana to provide students with free access to the university’s Sakai Learning Management Systems.

Following that, students have been asked to get Vodafone SIM cards to enjoy the free access.

Prof. Bopkin, however, is doubtful about the quality of Vodafone’s internet services.

“I understand that Vodafone is giving us free SIM cards but we are ensure of the connectivity. How reliable is the speed and quality? It is difficult to get something free and ask for quality and speed at the same time,” he told UniversNews in an interview.

The Dean of Students disclosed that he had already made his reservation on the matter to the University Management.

“I have suggested to the University management to immediately do the costing and explore the option of including the other networks, so students have options and that can also help us to compare, because competition comes with some level of quality,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Information Technology Officer at the University, Mr. Lucas Chigabatia, in an earlier interview said that it was already working to bring other networks on board so students can have options.

Although students suggested that the University brings MTN on board as well, Mr. Chigabatia is uncertain about such an agreement as the telecommunications company have announced that they are being challenged to maintain high quality service as data consumption has gone up by about 20 percent after the country recorded cases of the coronavirus outbreak.
