PTA joins Teacher Unions to kick against GES plans to reopen schools

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of Ghana has backed calls for the Ghana Education Service to review plans of reopening schools across the country.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Apostle Alexander Yaw Danso, Chairman of the PTA maintained that it would be only prudent to reopen schools when Covid-19 cases begin to drop.

He contended the exponential figures recorded in relation to the deadly disease is enough to discourage the hasty attempt to open up the system.

He questioned:” has the number of infections plummeted?, have we secured a vaccine? and has the West African Examination Council (WAEC) released a Press Statement communicating any impending exams? adding, they’re not ready to risk the health of their children in these dangerous times.

For him, the social distancing protocol and other measures won’t work in the schools, urging the Ministry and the GES to abort such plans.

Four Teacher unions including GNAT, NAGRAT, TEWU and CCT in a statement registered their opposition to the intended reopening.

They however, indicated that items for the observation of the prescribed protocols including nose masks, alcohol-based sanitizers are not available to them, hence the apprehension.

Schools have been on break since March, 2020 after the President’s first address on the Covid-19 pandemic.
