Adehye Special Home, a facility that supports children and adults with developmental delays with self-help skills and vocational training programmes, has appealed for partnership to generate adequate resources towards reaching more beneficiaries.
The Home also creates self-help groups for parents living within Agona Swedru and Gomoa in the Central Region.
Mrs Susan Larbi, Executive Director of the Home, told the Ghana News Agency that it had acquired a land to build a rehabilitation centre but needed the partnership of pro-human development individuals and organisations to fulfil that vision.
“The rehabilitation centre will provide professional care and treatment for all persons with disability who need the services,” Ms Larbi said.
She said providing for the special needs community was a huge responsibility that required the pooling of efforts and resources, adding, “I do not think one person can do it all”.
Mrs Larbi, a mother of a child with Autism, said she was able to support children with all kinds of disability in her facility and with the requisite more she could assist many to live productive lives.
“We do not have funding and so we are unable to admit a lot of students at a time, we are unable to pay our facilitators due to lack of funding, therefore, we have a large number of community members who are unable to access us now because of the limited services we provide,” she said.
Mrs Larbi said: “I started visiting homes to provide therapy and I have been able to train two facilitators, however, the number of families that needs our services within our catchment communities is overwhelming”.
To complement her efforts, she had, therefore, formed small self-help groups within the catchment communities.
