Member of Parliament for Ningro Prampram, Sam George, has raised concerns as to why the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) has not invited Nana Obiri Boahen for passing a comment on the voters register which the MP described as a breach of peace.
The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, is reported to have said, “…Stay home if you don’t agree to the compilation of the new register because anyone who tries to disrupt the exercise will be beaten. We will beat you mercilessly. What happened in Ayawaso is just a tip of the iceberg,” Nana Obiri Boahen said in an interview on Dadi 101.1FM.
Reacting to Obiri Boahen’s comment, Sam George questioned why the police failed to invite the NPP Deputy Secretary for making such utterances but instead invited Bernard Mornah for questioning.
Sam George, who was one of the NDC MPs who stormed the police Headquarters to support Bernard Mornah, further questioned the eligibility of the law wondering if Ghana has two different sets of laws.
“How do you invite Bernard Mornah who was advising the EC? What did Bernard Mornah say? He said if you go ahead with this registration at this time, there would be confusion. If there is confusion you will beat us if you beat us you will kill us. How do you invite Bernard Mornah for that but you fail to invite Nana Obiri Boahen. What did Nana Obiri Boahen say? He said anybody who was opposed to this, they will beat you and kill you. Is it because Nana Boahen is a member of the NPP? Why has the police not invited Obiri Boahen or we have two different sets of laws in Ghana? We will continue to resist oppressor rule,” the lawmaker rhetorically asked in an interview with GhanaWeb.
Members of Parliament of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) showed up in their numbers to support the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, who has been invited by the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) for questioning over his comments about the new voters’ register controversy.
Bernard Monarh was invited by the police over an alleged inflammatory statement which strongly cautioned the EC of a potential outbreak of political violence at registration centers.
The PNC chairman said the violence, which may likely occur, will be as a result of the exclusion of the existing voters' ID card from the list of identification requirements for the new voter registration exercise.
