Contents of parcels must be declared for taxation

Takoradi, Jan 18, GNA - Mr Emmanuel Sabaa, the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Post (GP), has said it was compulsory for people to pay taxes on all parcels sent or received through the post. Additionally, contents of such parcels must be declared for easy assessment and taxation.

Mr Sabaa, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Takoradi on Tuesday, said many people refused to declare the contents of their parcels in other to evade the payment of taxes. He said GP collaborates with the Customs excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and CEPS determines the value of each parcel and the appropriate tax that must be paid.

Mr Sabaa said theft of mails and other parcels have been traced to Spain and Germany. "GP is ready and willing to pay for any parcel that goes missing provided the correct items are declared."

Mr Sabaa said the introduction of the Instant Money Transfer (IMT) was an innovation that had assisted in the movement of money with ease. He urged the general public, especially traders, to patronise the IMT services to avoid any encounter with criminals and armed robbers.
