Former English footballer, Eni Aluko has triggered a public debate by suggesting that women’s football broadcasters should prioritise female pundits over their male counterparts.

She argued that female pundits often take a “supporting role” in the coverage of men’s football and claimed the same dynamic should apply to women’s football.

Her comments were reportedly aimed at Arsenal legend Ian Wright, whom she accused of taking over roles meant for women in female tournaments organised across the world.

Following backlash, Aluko issued a public apology to Wright, but the Arsenal legend rejected it.

Just as many thought the issue had been resolved, Aluko reignited the feud, asserting that Wright continued to occupy roles that should have gone to female pundits despite her earlier criticisms.

During a lengthy appearance on the 90s Baby Show Podcast, Aluko repeated her frustrations and urged the ex-Arsenal star to quit women’s punditry gigs, saying: “The issue I have with Ian is that, I think in his position he needs to clock what I’m saying.”

Her renewed comments have been met with strong criticisms from football fans on social media, who accused Aluko of being childish and damaging her own reputation.

Fans argued that she appeared entitled due to her achievements in the game, stressing that broadcasters select pundits they deem most suitable for the role.

Some advised her to stop attacking Ian Wright and instead focus on carving her own niche to earn punditry opportunities, warning that her actions risk harming the image of women in sports media.
