15-member LOC for African Hockey tournament

Accra, March 23, GNA - A 15-member Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has been formed to plan and execute preparations towards the successful hosting of the next African Hockey Championship to be hosted in Ghana in July this year.

The Committee to be chaired by Mr Abuga Pele, former Member of Parliament for Chaina-Paga has Okoi-Nikoi Dzani, Chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association as the Vice with Magnus Rex Danquah, the acting Chief Operating Officer.


The tourney, Ghana's first spans from July 8-18 and would be hosted in Accra and Kumasi.


Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister of Youth and Sports who inaugurated the Committee in Accra on Monday said the Ministry has set June 30 as the deadline for preparations for the Championship which would parade five other countries. He underscored the prominence of the event to government and pledged President John Evans Atta Mills' commitment towards the hosting and success of the competition.

He said he was optimistic that even though the Committee would be racing with time, the depth of quality in the membership would ensure it churns out a positive result.


Mr Abuga Pele pledged the commitment of the members to hosting of the event and said they would defy the odds to ensure a successful competition.


The Committee also has Bernard Mornah and Nii Quaye-Kumah as Deputy Chief Operations Officer and Secretary respectively. Other members include Dominic Asabea of the National Sports College, Frank Lartey Junior, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, DSP Samuel Okante, Lt. (Gen) A. K. Sarfo, Melvin Brown, A. A. Agbenatoe, Richard Akpokavi, Ms Elizabeth Kurtz and Ebenezer Lomotey.
