The Military Police Highway Patrol Unit has recorded 222 motor traffic offences on 13 highways since it started operations at the beginning of this month. A total of ten million cedis in the form of court fines have been collected from 30 offending drivers. In a statement, ASP David Eklu of the Police Public Relations Directorate said most of the offending drivers were arrested on the Accra-Kumasi highway. He said 192 cases involving over-speeding, drunkenness, the use defective and worn-out tyres and wrongful overtaking are yet to be heard by the courts. Currently, seven vehicles are being used for the highway patrol exercise. ASP Eklu says the number of armed robbery attacks on the highways has been reduced significantly since the patrols started.
