50 soccer volunteers to visit Ghana

Accra, July 18, GNA - A total of 50 volunteer soccer coaches from Germany, England, Holland and other European countries are to arrive in Ghana next year to help train Uunder-14 and 18 players nationwide.

Mr Peter Slowe, Global Director of Project Abroad, announced this at a special football tournament organised by the Project for four Under-14 teams in the Greater Accra Region at the Prisons Park in Accra. He said 15 coaches had been posted to the regions to teach soccer and rugby.

Mr Slowe stated that 3,000 young volunteers from 21 countries had been posted to Africa with Ghana getting 600 to work in orphanages, hospitals, schools, and the agriculture sector and the print media to enhance socio-economic advancement.

He said the tournament was dedicated to his Mother-in Law, Mrs Rita Briton, who died in Ghana a year ago.

Mr Slowe noted that Project Abroad had donated sporting kits worth 30 million cedis to the teams that participated to accelerate their talent hunt.

The Global Director said Ghana and India were the most interesting and peaceful countries the volunteers and holidaymakers choose to stay. Mr Tom Davis, Deputy Country-Director, said Project Abroad was established to enable volunteers to learn and understand cultural, economic and political issues in Ghana.

Master Alistair Slowe, son of the Global Director said next year, he would sponsor all Under 14 and 18 teams, in the Greater Accra Region to help them to develop their potentials to promote soccer in Ghana. He stressed that he would solicit sponsorship from the New Castle Football team in England for the Cantonments Football Club. In the opening match, King Shegay beat Inter Milan three goals to one.

Other teams that participated included the Cantonment FC and the Maranatha FC.
