Members of the famous “64 Battalion” of Accra Hearts of Oak have declared their support for the Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio Charity match on Friday, June 29, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The “64 Battalion” of Accra of Hearts Oak sporting Club, it would be recalled conquered the continent and the local scene in 2000 and 2001 by winning the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Champions League and the Super Cup as well as several domestic trophies.
A number of the members including goalkeeper Sammy Adjei, Eben Dida Armah, Jacob Nettey, Amankwah Mireku and Ishmael Addo have all given their firm commitment to the match and pledged to play as 'Friends of Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio' team in the charity match.
Speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports, keeper Sammy Adjei lauded the initiative saying it is a good step to recognize the contributions of the renowned coach who supervised their success in 2000 and 2001.
Keeper Adjei said he would be out on Friday to support the cause as part of his contribution towards the project, which is aimed at honouring the coach and to raise funds for his support as well as the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra .
Keeper Adjei pledged to mobilize the rest of his colleagues who are yet to be informed about the game to come on board to support the project.
“We are all aware of the state of health of our dear coach and participating in the game will be one of the greatest contributions we can make to him.
“I am looking forward to this day and I appeal to all fans of the Club and other sympathizers to patronize the game to enable the organizers meet their target for the project”. Adjei stated.
It would be recalled that the renowned coach was last Saturday hosted on an Accra based radio station together with Mireku and Addo in connection with the match, which is been organized by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Primeval Consult – an event management company.
According to the organizers, the “Friends of Attuquayefio” side will feature both former and current players in likes of Togolese star Emmanuel Adebayor, keeper Sammy Adjei, Emmanuel Osei Kufour, Jacob Nettey, Godwin Osei Bonsu, Bobie Ansah, Charles Akunnor, Nii Odartey Lamptey, Mahatma Otoo, Joe Ansah, Michael Helegbe, Bernard Kumodzi, Samuel Affum, Amankwa Mireku, Ishmael Addo, John Painstil and Asamoah Gyan.
The Black Stars will parade players like keeper Daniel Agyei, John Boye, Isaac Vorsah, Daniel Opare, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, David Addy, Anthony Annan, Sulley Muntari, Rabiu Mohammed, Kwadjo Asamoah, John Mensah, Samuel Inkoom, Derek Boateng, Jerry Akaminko, Prince Tagoe, keeper Robert Dabuo, Richard Mpong and Emmanuel Baffour.**
