Malik Jabir
Former Ghana international Malik Jabir has described the new generation of Ghanaian players as a “pack of lazy guys” who are “physically not fit.”
Jabir represented the Black Stars of Ghana between 1966 and 1977 and only missed out on a place in the 1978 Afcon squad after personally opting out.
Speaking on Ultimate FM’s Sports Zone on the difference between his generation of players and the current crop, Jabir said players in the 60’s and 70’s were far stronger than those of the current generation.
“The main difference lies in training. We used to do double sessions of 2 hours each, everyday. And if you missed one day, you were kicked out of the team.
“Unfortunately, they have not seen the way we did things and don’t have any role models. The senior ones among them are lazy, and what you end up with is a pack of lazy guys,” he told host Benjamin Yamoah.
Jabir, who has previously coached the national U-23 team the Black Meteors and is currently the technical director of Asante Kotoko, also bemoaned the lack of strength in the modern day Ghanaian footballer.
“They are physically not fit and I think because they don’t eat the right food, they are not strong. A lot,” Jabir concluded.
Malik Jabir is a one-club man, who played for Asante Kotoko between 1964 and 1977, winning the Africa Cup of Champions (now CAF Champions league) in 1970.
