AFCON 1992: I didn't know I will captain Black Stars in the final – Tony Baffoe

Former Ghana international and Deputy General Secretary of the Confederation of African Anthony Baffoe has revealed that he was surprised he was chosen as the Black Stars’ captain in the final against Ivory Coast in 1992.

Tony Baffoe captained the team in the final as a replacement for suspended Abedi "Pele" Ayew who was the substantive captain of the team.

The decision by coach Otto Pfister for Bafffoe to captain the team in the final game came as a surprise to many who were hoping to see Anthony Yeboah with the captain's hand band against the Ivorians.

Anthony Yeboah who was hurt about the decision to let Baffoe captain the team in the absence of Abedi while he was the substantive assistant told GTV Sports plus that the coach was influenced by top officials in Ghana.

“To be honest I was very surprised and at the same time, the Kumasi group was shocked so it was affecting us during the game. They knew I was assistant captain

“That time Tony Baffoe was new in the national team and shouldn’t have been captain. I think this situation affected us a lot. Before the game, Otto Pfister told us that we have a letter from Ghana that Tony Baffoe should be captain. Everybody was shocked and it affected the team,” he said.

However, responding to the claims made by Anthony Yeboah, Baffoe said "I was not expecting to lead the team. Many people thought Abedi Pele had a hand in the decision because he was my roommate but that wasn’t true. Abedi Pele was innocent,” he told GTV.
