AFCON 1992: I was surprised to captain Black Stars in final - Tony Baffoe

Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe has revealed that he never thought of captaining the Black Stars in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Senegal.

Substantive captain Abedi Pele was suspended for the match against Ivory Coast and Tony Yeboah, who was assistant, was supposed to lead the team in the field.

But, a last-minute decision from coach Otto Pfister saw Anthony Baffoe who has not been with the team for long leading the team on the day.

This generated a heated argument in the country.

Tony Yeboah recently disclosed that he was shocked and angry that he didn't captain the Black Stars for the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations final in Senegal.

Recounting the incident, Yeboah said then-coach Otto Pfister told the team a letter came from Ghana that Tony Baffoe should be captain. According to him, the team was affected during the game.

“To be honest I was very surprised and at the same time, the Kumasi group was shocked so it was affecting us during the game. They knew I was assistant captain,” Yeboah said.

“That time Tony Baffoe was new in the national team and shouldn’t have been captain. I think this situation affected us a lot. Before the game, Otto Pfister told us that we have a letter from Ghana that Tony Baffoe should be captain. Everybody was shocked and it affected the team,” he said.

However, Anthony Baffoe responding to Yeboah’s comment said, “I was not expecting to lead the team. Many people thought Abedi Pele had a hand in the decision because he was my roommate but that wasn’t true. Abedi Pele was innocent” he told GTV.
