With barely one week to their Group F opener against the “African Wild Dogs” of Guinea Bissau, Cameroon has appointed Paris Saint Germaine attacker Choupo-Moting to lead the team in search of a sixth continental glory in Egypt from June 21 to July 19.
The German-born forward was named to lead the Indomitable Lions in a press conference earlier this week, as they prepare to take on Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, June 25, at Ismailia Stadium.
Without a substantive captain ahead of appointing their Dutch coach Clarence Seedorf, Benjamin Moukandjo, who led the side to clinch gold at the 2017 AFCON in Gabon, held the armband until Seedorf’s appointment when the striker announced retirement from international duty.
With his second AFCON appearance after making the continental showpiece in 2015, Choupo-Moting, who in his maiden season with Ligue 1 champions PSG has made 22 league appearances and scored three goals in the process excused himself from the 2017 championship, which the Lions eventually won.
Cameroon would need to dispatch Guinea-Bissau, Ghana and Benin on 25th, 29th and 2nd July, 2019 respectively to make it to the next round of the 24 nation tournament, if there is any hope of clinching the trophy for the sixth time.
