Accra, Nov. 28, GNA - Newly formed Accra Rugby Club (ARC), on Saturday, emerged winners of a one-day Invitational Rugby Tournament at the University of Ghana Rugby Pitch, Accra, by beating Cosmos Buffaloes 10-0.
Playing under the supervision of coach Claude Scholtz, ARC demonstrated enough strength and power to overcome their opponents in an event organised by Africa Financial Service (AFS) as part of their efforts to promote the game in Ghana.
Witnessed by die-hard Rugby fans, members of the university community as well as individuals from the business community, ARC, though were presented with stiff opposition from Cosmos Buffaloes managed to subdue them with sheer, skills combined with speed and excellent body swerves. Worlanyo Agrah, Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC) presented the trophy at stake to the winners of the competition and urged the players to remain disciplined and committed to the game.
He commended the sponsors for putting up the competition, saying it was a positive move towards the organization of the sport in Ghana. Agrah, said the decision of AFS to sponsor the event will go a long way to promote the sport in the country.
Opening the competition, Nii Nortey Duah, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports described the event as a laudable one and called on the sponsors and organisers to make it an annual tournament. "This event must not be one day show, but a consistent one in order to make players regular and active as well as develop more players for the national team". He stated.
He said the Ministry and the NSC is ready to collaborate with the sponsors and organizers to ensure that the event is organized every year to sustain the interest of people in the sport whilst grooming talents. Nortey Duah expressed the hope that, Rugby will develop to the required standards in Ghana, following the sponsorship provided by the company for the sport.
He called on the officials in charge of the development of Rugby in Ghana to take advantage of the sponsorship opportunity to organise more competitions.
The one day invitational tournament also saw Intercontinental Mining and Contracting Services, Frontline Capital Advisor, Omega Risk Solutions and Zenith Bank as sponsors.
Among other teams, which participated in the event are; Driving Light Preparatory, University of Ghana Rugby team, Wilberforce Preparatory, Warrior Ladies, Cosmos U-14, Accra Sharks, and Dansoman Huriccanes. 28 Nov. 10
