The Director of the National Sports Authority, Joe Kpenge says the Accra Sports stadium is far from a death trap as has been reported by a section of the Ghanaian media.
The NSA has come under server criticism over the last few months because of reports that the stadium which was renovated to host the 2008 Nations Cup has been left to rot only seven years after the AFCON tournament.
Photos of the deplorable conditions at the Accra Sports stadium have been widely circulated on social media sites, with many accusing the NSA of doing nothing to save the edifice.
But speaking to the media earlier this week, Joe Kpenge who heads the NSA says the reports have been highly exaggerated.
According to the NSA boss, his outfit is trying hard to maintain the facility contrary to public perception that they are doing nothing to keep it safe.
‘We contracted a company to do an assessment of the stadium and they assured us after the evaluation that the stadium is not in danger of collapsing in the near future. Even with that assurance we have asked them to do some maintenance work on the facility which will start soon. So yes, we agree that some parts of the stadium are rusting but that does not represent a death trap as some would have us believe,’ Joe Kpenge said.
