Accra to be projected through Millennium Marathon race

Mr. Mohammed Adjei-Sowah, Chief Executive Officer of Accra Metropolitan Assmebly (AMA), has said the Big Millennium Marathon would help bring people together and project the country’s capital city, Accra.

He made this statement when Organizers of the Millennium Marathon, paid a zcourtesy call on him to invite him to the event.

It was also explain to him activities lined up ahead of the Big Millennium Marathon on Saturday, September 22.

According to him, the Millennium Marathon was a very big competition, which can be used to promote the capital city.

Mr. Adjei-Sowah, said that the event would showcase the capital city and also bring people from Ghana and beyond together.

“We want to promote the city and we are using sports as an opportunity to promote the city and for that matter there have been successful marathon events organized in Boston, London and others.

"We believe that as we are organizing and becoming increasingly an international event we will be showcasing the city of Accra and thus have a successful event.

“What is important is that it is a community event. It is an event that brings people in the city together. It’s not more of a competition although people who place first and second are seen as champions. For us anyone who participates in the event is seen as a champion.”

He stated that, events like the Millennium Marathon can help to reduce the number of deaths from cardiac arrest in the country.

Mr. Ashim Morton, the Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Marathon Limited, said organizers are working hard to make this year’s marathon successful adding that, the winner will be offered an opportunity to participate in the upcoming Dubai Marathon.

“We are giving winners of the Millennium Marathon a return ticket to participate in the upcoming Dubai Marathon. We are working hard to ensure this year’s Marathon is successfully organized. We’ve had meetings with the Police Department and the ambulance so things are going on course and we looking forward to a successful Marathon this year.”

The Big Millennium Marathon is scheduled for September 22 and promises to welcome athletes around the world competing for a slot in the Dubai Marathon.
