Adelaide United to trial former Ghana international

Adelaide United's prime foreign target Lloyd Owusu is heading to town on Tuesday.

The striker - who has been released by English League One club Cheltenham Town - is scheduled to meet United officials and train with the Reds for five days.

The Ghana international has also been tabled an offer from another League One club Brighton Hove and Albion after he scored six goals in 14 matches on loan from Cheltenham to help save the Seagulls from relegation.

Adelaide football director Michael Valkanis said Owusu wanted to experience the Australian culture and United's football systems before deciding his future.

"We know he's got a young family and that's one of the reasons why he wants to look for himself," Valkanis said.

"He wants to weigh up which way to go and at the same time we'll weigh up our options." Owusu won League One's player of the month in April.

The striker was due to represent Ghana in their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006 but tore a hamstring in a warm-up match against Stuttgart in Germany just weeks before the start of the tournament.

Owusu could be the second Ghana striker to sign for an Adelaide club after Edson Annan starred for Adelaide Juventus in the early 1970s.

It's understood an Argentine attacking midfielder is on United's radar after impressing Reds specialist coach Carl Veart playing for Union Espanola last weekend in Santiago.

Valkanis wouldn't name the South American target but said the club was very impressed with the attacking midfielder's credentials.

"He does a lot of creative runs at people, takes people on and he can strike a beautiful ball," Valkanis said.

"He brings people into play.

"He's asked a lot of questions about our country, he's young and he's eager.

"They all know about Adelaide United and us being in the Club World Cup."

Valkanis said he expected Adelaide to trial at least three more players next month before the club settles on its 20-man roster.

"We've done our homework and we've got our shortlist," he said.

"We're going to make a move in the next couple of weeks."

Meanwhile, retired Adelaide keeper Daniel Beltrame has landed the goalkeeper coaching gig for new franchise North Queensland Fury.
