Aggrey Fynn laid to rest

Cape Coast, Jan 22, GNA - The mortal remains of Mr Edward Aggrey Fynn, a former captain of the senior national team, the Black Stars was on Saturday laid to rest at the Asokeano cemetery at Cape Coast. Several mourners including signatories like Mr Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, Acting Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, his Deputy, Mr Joe Aggrey, Mr Muniru Arafat Nuhu, the acting Cape Coast Municipal Chief Executive and Mr Ato Arthur, District Chief Executive among others turned up to pay their last respects to the renowned footballer. Also present were some friends and team-mates including Edward Acquah, Wilberforce Mfum and Reverend Osei Kofi.

Delivering the sermon during the state funeral at the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium, The Very Reverend Emmanuel Williams, the Dean of the Anglican Christ Cathedral described the late Aggrey Fynn as a devout and devoted Christian who trusted in God.

He said the late Aggrey Fynn was also dedicated during his playing days to the senior national team and won many admirers during his soccer career.

The Very Reverend urged all Ghanaians to emulate the shining example of the late Aggrey Fynn and contribute in a similar way to move the country forward.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the National Sports Council (NSC), past players of Dwarfs and Mr Ben Koufie, immediate past Chairman of the GFA paid tributes to the departed soul.

In his tribute, Mr Koufie described the late Aggrey Fynn as a great footballer who exhibited a high sense of discipline and a perfect gentleman who was one of the finest of the sport.

"In fact his contribution on the ball was a delight to watch and had a magnetism that drew the crowd in their thousands to the stadium any time he played a match"

The tribute also traced the late footballers career as a coach when he obtained a British Football Association coaching certificate and teamed up with Koufie to win their first continental title in 1970 in Congo Kinshasa.

He is also said to have handled the Academicals from 1970 to 1972 during which time he chalked some outstanding victories over their Nigerian counterparts.

In 1994 he was engaged as the team manger of the Black Stars for the Cup of Nations in Tunisia and was in 1997 rewarded for his dedicated service with a Grand Medal - Civil Division.

The Aggrey Fynn died at the Age of 71 at Cape Coast after a protracted illness.
