Telecommunications operators, Airtel Ghana has secured the sponsorship rights as the headline sponsors for the Ghana Golf Open billed for September 19- 21.
The three-day competition has been renamed the 82nd Airtel Ghana Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi.
Head of Corporate Communications, Donald Gwira, said Airtel’s decision to sponsor golf in the country was for strategic reasons.
"Airtel is already into sports by unearthing young talented footballers from the Airtel rising stars. Adding golf makes us cater for both young and old in the sporting fraternity."
Gwira said that Airtel had begun a journey with the Ghana Golf Association (GGA) which will be reviewed onward.
President of the GGA, Felix K. Frempong, expressed his gratitude to the telecommunication company for coming on board to sponsor the competition and lift the image of the game in the country.
The Ghana Open is an annual event organized to celebrate the birth date of Ghana’s former President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The competition is the premier event of the GGA and this year’s edition is expected to attract about 100 golfers from almost 18 golf clubs in the country.
