Sports administrators urged to guide against partisan politics

Wa, Feb. 1, GNA - Mr. Stephen Engmen, Special Assistant to the Upper West Regional Minister, Mr Mogtari Sahanun at the weekend appealed to football administrators to avoid associating partisan politics into soccer and other sporting activities since their development ensures unity amongst the people.

"It is partisan politics, ethnicity and chieftaincy disputes that militate against the growth and development of sports, especially soccer in this part of the country and there is the need for the trend to be vehemently resisted", he added.

Mr. Engmen made the appeal at Wa when he inaugurated the Numbo United soccer club, a second division club whose upliftment will augment the existing clubs in the region.

He said the Upper West Region abound swith sporting talents but was often stifled by such aforementioned disputes that is connoted with social and religious discriminations.

He said in the developed world, football players and sportsmen are revered not because of their colour, religion or ethnic groupings but by their sporting prowess that is seen as paramount to other social discriminative acts. More

Mr. Issah Hamidu Bomison, Chairman of the club gave the assurance that they would use all avenues available to invest in the club to enable it to be promoted into the premiership in the next few years. "All we need to do is to remain united, committed and dedicated towards the aims and aspirations of the club to spur us onto the pinnacle of the premiership", he added.

He said since the exit of the Upper West Heroes FC from the then First Division, the Region has not witnessed any premier division matches denying the people such opportunities and it was for this reason that the club will strive to achieve sucsess.

Mr Bomison promised to inject discipline and good behaviour into both the playing body and the management of the club to ensure the long span of the team.

Mr Solomon Aggrey-Fynn, Deputy Chairman of the club said it was a challenge for Numbo United to surpass the performance of other clubs in the region and prayed that they will through their activities ensure the re-unification of all football enthusiasts in the region. He appealed to the people of the region to lend their maximum support to the club so place it into a better position of representing the region, adding that, "We need the support of everybody to be able to move to the premiership".
