2008/09 Glo Premier League goalking Alex Asamoah is back in Ghana training with Kumasi Asante Kotoko. Asamoah was in Turkey for two weeks purportedly to seal a switch to Turkish side Karsiyaka Spor Kulubu (KSK) but the deal broke down over contract fees. According to the player’s agent, the offer put on the table by KSK was way below Kotoko’s asking price hence the decision by Asamoah to return home.
Asamoah netted 16 goals in the past season’s league, most of them in the last ten games to help Kotoko stage an albeit unsuccessful but remarkable comeback. Those goals powered the Kumasi based club to a second place finish and a ticket to the preliminary stages of next year’s CAF Champions’ League. Many local football connoisseurs believe it will be best for the striker’s career to remain with Kotoko for at least another season in order to cement his goal scoring profile.
But that has not deterred many clubs abroad in persuading the 23 year old hitman to join the football exodus bandwagon. KSK succeeded in luring him to Turkey but apparently were unwilling to meet the asking price for the player who cost Kotoko a local transfer record to secure from Ashantigold barely a year ago. News also remain rife that German Bundesliga outfit Nurnberg who already have in their fold another former Asante Kotoko striker Isaac Boakye are also on the trail of Alex Asamoah.
But the player is meanwhile concentrating on training with Kotoko and is ready for selection for the dethroned league champions when the MTN Top 4 kicks off this Sunday. Asamoah has vowed to maintain his prolific goal-scoring record to help Kotoko to victory in the Top 4 as the chase for his signature by clubs across Europe intensifies.
