Since 2007 when organised beach soccer was first introduced to Ghana, the popularity of the sport has spread along the country's coastlines with remarkable speed.

Six years later, the Ghana Ghana Beach Soccer Association (GBSA), is set to wrap up the final round of matches and coronation of Champions in two Beach Soccer leagues at the weekend.

The first of its kind in West Africa, the leagues will see out the final round of matches when Sunset Sports from the coastal area of Keta stand on the verge of making history as the winners of the maiden beach soccer league.

It could also be unprecedented should they win as the first team to go a whole season unbeaten if they can avoid defeat to local team Layoca on Saturday.

Their closest rivals Havedzi Mighty Warriors will lock horns with the powerful ''Tsunami'' Dansoman BSC knowing that anything but a win will all but end their slim hopes of winning the trophy.

Wuo Gb33 take on Ada Assurance in a match which could decide the winner of the goal king award. Wuo Gb33 striker Richard Osa leads the pack with 29 goals while Ada Assurance forward Joseph Larweh trails him by just 2 goals so there is still so much to play for.

Sunset Sports Michael Sema who is on 28 goals is also in contention for the DSTV ‘walka’ which would be awarded to the goal king with other attractive packages.

In other top tier fixtures, East Legon Sharks play Tegbi Youth while Senya Sharks take on Osu Dolphins. The Sharks from East Legon would be boosted by MP aspirant Kingsley Awuah Darko.

In the Division 1 league, Golden Eagles take on Gulf Powers, African Angels will play Chokor Blue Whales while uncrowned Division1 league champions Teshie United will play local rivals Nungua BSC in what would be a tight encounter.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Hon Clement Kofi Humado has stated that the historic coronation of Ghana's first ever beach soccer champions is an ocassion that calls for support and solidarity by all sports supporters and stakeholders.

His view is supported by the President of the Ghana Football Association-Kwesi Nyantakyi, who will be there to present the winning trophy along with Miss Ghana Tourism, the La Mantse Nii Kpobi Tettey-Tsuru III and Nii Adjei Kraku II - Tema Paramount Chief among others.

Ever present sponsors, Voltic Ghana Limited have increased their package for the winners with an assortment of drinks, souvenirs and t-shirts.

Cal Bank the headline sponsor of the Championship with a total of GH¢40,000 will present a cheque of GH¢5,000 to the Champions.

The Division League winners will take home GH¢2,500 for their efforts.

The President of the GBSA Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has confirmed that a report on the 2011/12 Ghana Beach Soccer League will be presented to the GFA who will partner all future beach soccer activities and seek accreditation to CAF and FIFA.

This special event would take place at the La Beach Soccer Arena –just a few minutes drive from the Labadi Beach Hotel – from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
