The Ghana international says he supported the Red Devils and idolised the box-to-box midfielder

Leicester City youngster Daniel Amartey says he used to admire Manchester United and retired midfielder Paul Scholes while growing up in Ghana.

Scholes, 41, played his entire professional career for the Red Devils between 1991 and 2013, helping the side to win eleven English Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two Uefa Champions League trophies, among others.

Amartey joined the Foxes from Danish side Copenhagen in January following an earlier stint with Swedish outfit Djurgadens IF.

“When I was growing up, I used to like Manchester United and my favourite player was Paul Scholes,” Amartey was quoted as saying by the Leicester City News Service.

“I wasn’t daunted at all. I really admired how he played football.

“The Premier League is the best in the world, and how well Leicester have done this season was another attraction for me joining the club.

“To come to a team that is top of the Premier League was something I couldn’t turn down, and I didn’t find it a daunting prospect at all.

“I’d watched quite a lot of Leicester before joining and I remember saying to myself: ‘This is a good team’. I was very impressed with what they achieved last season.”

Amartey has so far made two league appearances for the league leaders, including a second-half appearance in Saturday’s 1-0 triumph over Watford.
