Ex-Ghana captain CK Akonnor has hailed Stephen Appiah as the “greatest” captain of the Black Stars whose achievements cannot be unrivalled.
Akonnor claims the Cesena man, who quit international football after the 2010 World Cup finals, was the unifier the national team needed to chalk the modest successes in the past nine years.
The Ex-Wolfsburg captain also highlighted the Ghana camp and dressing room dispute between captain Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah which retrogressed Ghana football for more than a decade.
Akonnor also admitted failing to deal with similar problems when he was handed the captain’s armband.
“To tell you the truth a lot of players have done a lot for the country in the past but I think he is the greatest of them all. He did a good job as captain for the Black Stars where he shepherd the country to two successive World Cup finals,” Akonnor told Happy FM.
“During the tenure as the captain there was no confusion in the team as was the case in the past when Abedi Pele and Anthony Yeboah were playing actively for the national team.
“Everything was perfect when he took over from us and that is the honest truth. Pele captained me but there was confusion between him and Yeboah. At first I would not have said it but can say it now because now I’m grown and so can make my case clear.”
Appiah burst onto the football scene plying his career for local side Hearts of Oak in 1995 and played for all the national teams. He went on to play for Italian sides Udinese, Brescia, Parma, Juventus, Bologna and Turkish side Fenerbahce.
